Anita Saarkessian
Anita Sarkeesian (Canadian-American) is a feminist media critic, public speaker and Canadian. Feminist Frequency is a site which hosts video and commentary analysing portrayals women in popular culture. Anita Sarkeesian, a Canadian-American blogger and media critic that has received awards in her field, is an activist blogger. Feminist Frequency is a website to educate about the role of women in pop culture, is managed by Sarkeesian. Determined to challenge the assumptions about women and popular culture, she works on issues related to targeted harassment against women as well as other classes of people in the online space. Sarkeesian has a Master's degree in social and political thinking at York University. As a public speaker, she is popular and has given talks at TEDxWomen XOXO and United Nations Broadband Working Group. From an early age Sarkeesian was intrigued by gender issues and feminist ideas. In her final year at university, in 2009, she founded the Feminist Frequency site. An ambitious woman planned to create a web-series to study gender representation in video games. However, she found herself as the victim of an online harassment campaign. However, this did not deter her. This only helped her as a feminist journalist. She has won numerous awards to recognize her significant contributions to the world of feminism. Anita Sarkeesian, a media critic who has won a variety of awards and created Feminist Frequency an educational non-profit organization that examines how women are represented in popular culture narratives.
